History

Multnomah County was established in 1854 from parts of Washington County and Clackamas County. It was created because Portland residents had difficulty traveling to Hillsboro, the county seat of Washington County. The county was named after the Multnomah Indian who originally lived on Sauvie Island in the Columbia River. The Port of Portland was established in 1891. It exports more wheat than any other American port.

Multnomah County is 465 square miles and is the smallest county in Oregon. Portland is the county's largest city with a population of well over 550,000. Multnomah County and Portland, Oregon have a rich history. Places to visit include the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Rose Test Gardens, Oregon Historical Society, Washington Park and Zoo, Portland Art Museum, Japanese Gardens in Portland, and Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.
